Fun & Learning in the Water

This innovative series of three programs is presented by LARPD Park Rangers and helps teachers meet many Next Generation Science Standards for 4th and 5th grade students. Two in-class programs, each one hour long, actively engage students in learning about watersheds and how pollution on land can affect the health of creatures that live in our local waterways and oceans. The in-class programs also prepare students to act as scientists to assess the health of a local creek on a 90-minute field trip to a local creek that is included in the series. (Schools must coordinate transportation.) Available to 4th and 5th grade classes in Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton. For more information or to schedule programs, email rangers@larpd.org or call Peggy at (925) 960 2400.

Adjustments due to COVID-19: While stay-at-home orders are in place, the KIDS for the BAY staff team deliver their programs through Distance Learning in partnership with teachers, including online resources, lesson plans and video demonstrations. In addition, teachers, students and parents are invited to explore At Home Activities to stay engaged until schools return to their regular schedule.

In the KIDS for the BAY Storm Drain Rangers Program (SDR), third through fifth grade students learn about the San Francisco Bay estuary ecosystem, creek-bay-ocean connections and reducing stormwater pollution. Students lead Schoolwide Assemblies and organize Zero Waste events to teach about watershed stewardship and reducing trash and waste by practicing the Five Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot and Refuse. The SDR includes four two-hour classroom lessons that support Next generation Science Standards and Common Core Standards, a trash clean-up project and a student-led Schoolwide Assembly. Partner teachers receive hands-on training and ongoing support through our Blue Watershed Classrooms Project.
